What’s the Difference Between a Migraine and a Headache?

CBD is a phytocannabinoid found in the industrial hemp plant that’s popular for addressing a range of ailments naturally. Although research is still limited around this plant compound, there is a lot of promising data that suggests it could be effective. There is mounting evidence that backs up how CBD can relieve pain. Some individuals swear by this plant-powered product to ease headaches and migraines. But is it really an effective option?

Migraine and headaches affect the same area of the body and carry similar symptoms but they are distinct from one another.

Headaches are an extremely common condition that most people will experience from time to time. It’s normal to get roughly two headaches a week. Headaches are defined as pain in the head or face. This can feel like throbbing pain ranging from sharp to dull.

Migraine attacks include more symptoms than the average stress- or allergy-related headache. Lasting anywhere from 4 to 72 hours, an attack is underscored by nausea, vomiting, and an extreme sensitivity to light and sound in addition to classic headache symptoms. The Migraine Research Foundation found that roughly 39 million people in the U.S. and one billion globally suffer from migraines.

How Can CBD Help With Headaches and Migraines?

We still have a lot to learn about CBD and its impact on the body. According to a 2018 study, CBD does in fact carry anti-inflammatory properties and can reduce pain. A survey also displayed that 86% of respondents experienced a decrease in headache pain after a 30-day trial using CBD.

Most of the research we have about neurological pain is focused on migraines specifically. So far, there is evidence-based on the results of a recent study that suggests a majority of migraine sufferers found relief from introducing CBD into their routine.

Further research also found that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) plays a role in migraine mitigation. CBD interacts with the CB1 and CB2 within the ECS. The plant compound helps bolster the ECS’s natural ability to keep the body in homeostasis.

Research presented at the 3rd Congress of the European Academy of Neurology also found evidence to back up the positive impact CBD may have on migraine prevention. Phase I involved 48 people with chronic migraine taking a combination of two compounds orally. One compound contained 19 percent THC, while the other contained 9 percent CBD and 0.3% or less THC. Phase II studied those with chronic migraine or cluster headaches. These 79 individuals received a daily dose of 200 mg of the THC-CBD combination from phase I or 25 mg of amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant.

The results found that participants saw a 40.4 percent reduction in their migraine attacks while on the THC-CBD combination while there was only a 40.1 percent reduction while on amitriptyline. Those with cluster headaches only reported a slight decrease in the severity and frequency of their headaches but saw a 43.5 percent drop in pain intensity.

We Still Need More Research on CBD and Headaches
