How to Choose the Right CBD Dosage for You

20mg per capsule, 33mg per dropper, 300mg in a bottle… what does this all mean?!

If you’re new to using CBD, we’re sure that you’ve seen tons of numbers flying around. It can be hard to understand what they all mean and how it all affects you in the end (if it does at all).

We were all in your position once, so never fear, there is a way to understand what these numbers represent! It’s not rocket science. Understanding your proper CBD dosage will help you in reaping the benefits of CBD. Let’s break it down to find the dosage that fits your needs.


What is a “Single Dose” of CBD Oil?

There seems to be a lot of noise surrounding what “one dose” of CBD oil even is and what time of day you should be taking it.

Simply put, a single dose of CBD oil is the single-serving that fits your needs. This may be more than what’s on the packaging. The product retailer you purchase from will always include the number of servings allotted in the single product unit. However, your “single dose” might not be the same as someone else’s.

Honestly, the dosage of CBD you take could be two or three times the amount of the recommended dosage on the packaging. And, this could be taken one to two times per day, depending on your needs.

That’s because it is based on the recommended dosage. This doesn’t mean that it is the end all be all of what you should take in a day, it’s just what the retailer has stated to help you conserve your portions.

Let’s say that you bought a 1000mg CBD tincture. In that tincture bottle is 30mL (or 1 ounce). The product states “30 servings in a bottle”. This means that for every 1mL of the product, that is the recommended dosage/serving size. Let’s do some simple math.

1 tincture bottle: 1,000/30 = 33.33

We divided the total number of milligrams in the product (1,000) by the total estimated servings in the bottle (30). This gives us the total number of milligrams by the recommended serving size.

By using this formula, the total number of milligrams per serving is roughly 33mg. That means, if each dropper is equal to 1mL, you get 33mg per dropper.

Make sense? Great!

Now, this doesn’t mean that this is your serving size to fill your needs.

“What?! Now I’m confused again.”

Well, like we stated above, the packaging recommended a 30-day dosage plan based on the number of milligrams in the product. This plan is for the base user. Some need more, others need less.

The important thing to remember is that the recommended dosage isn’t set in stone and should be adjusted according to your direct needs. There are no studies that show you can overdose on CBD.

In fact, a 2017 clinical research study showed that CBD is generally very safe for human consumption. However, a potential side effect of having your body’s “too much CBD” is feeling sleepy as CBD has a calming, almost tranquil effect on our receptors.


How Do I Calculate How Much CBD I Need?

We just got through calculating how much CBD you get in a single recommended serving from a 1,000mg bottle of CBD oil. Now, we need to dig a little deeper to better understand how much CBD you’ll be needing.


Weigh Yourself

Start this discovery by finding out your natural body weight. There are plenty of guides online for how to calculate your dosage based on body weight alone, however, this shouldn’t be your only component of the equation. We’ll explain more on that later.

The formula you’ll typically find online is based on milligrams of CBD per every 10 pounds. CBD potency is added into the formula to better find your tolerance level. So, for example, let’s say you weigh 100 pounds. 100/10 = 10mg for your single serving.

Let’s use this weight with CBD potency:

Low potency = 1mg CBD per pound:

100 pounds of body weight: 10 pounds x 1mg CBD = 10mg

Medium potency = 3mg CBD per pound:

100 pounds of body weight: 10 pounds x 3mg CBD = 30mg

High potency = 6mg CBD per pound:

100 pounds of body weight: 10 pounds x 6mg CBD = 60mg

Obviously, if you weigh 104.5 pounds or 256 pounds, you’d use the same formula for finding the proper dosage. As a rule of thumb, round up, not down.


Start With a Lower Dosage

What we mean by not relying on body weight alone is that, one [serving] size does not fit all.

Some people have a higher tolerance than others. Or, they may have more visceral fat on their body which absorbs more of the CBD oil in the fat cells.

If you’re totally new to taking CBD oil, you should be starting off with a lower dosage. Using the formulas above, think about taking that recommended serving size first as it’s there to guide your dosage.

Once you’ve tried a certain dosage and don’t notice anything, slowly increase the dosage as needed.


Take CBD Regularly

The common misconception is that you take CBD oil to make you feel better, then you stop using it because “the problem is solved!” Don’t stop using your CBD unless you are experiencing other health problems or it conflicts with your current medication.

If you’re “not feeling it” in the first day of taking CBD, we want to make something very clear: CBD is to be taken regularly. Such as your daily vitamin, you’re to take it on a regular basis once you start using it. You’re not supposed to take CBD when you’re looking for an “instant relief.” This isn’t a medication and we’re not claiming that it is.

Whatever benefits you discover CBD has for you depends on your need(s) for taking it and the dosage you take. This isn’t an opioid. This isn’t cough medicine. It is a natural product sourced from industrial hemp plants.

CBD is definitely not a drug such as its cousin, THC. You won’t be “feeling” anything. Actually, the hope is that you notice things that you aren’t feeling. If you have had joint pains and no longer feel them, don’t just stop using CBD. Or if you typically can’t fall asleep at night and you start falling asleep quickly, continue taking CBD.


Ask Your Doctor

If you’re concerned about CBD oil conflicting with your current medications or you don’t know where to start, contact your physician. MDs will make recommendations for the amount of CBD you should/shouldn’t be taking. Many doctors are on board for using CBD and can prescribe a certain dosage for you. Be forewarned, not every doctor is familiar with CBD.

While CBD is a natural phytocannabinoid that has been used for over a millennium, that doesn’t necessarily mean that all doctors know how it will affect you. When we suggest that you ask your doctor for advice when it comes to CBD, it’s to help you decide if a lower or higher dosage is necessary to experience CBD’s beneficial effects.


Is An Online CBD Dosage Calculator Accurate?

Yes and no.

Calculators are based on numbers and formulas. This means that they will only look at recommended numbers based on the input of what the human who created the calculator based their charts on.

Essentially, it will calculate the dosage based on your weight and “ailment” or condition for which you intend to use the CBD. This means that you’ll get a general recommendation that doesn’t necessarily mean it will fit your need.

Don’t rely on CBD dosage calculators. Use them as a base and discover what works best for your needs.


When Should I Take CBD?

The time of day that you take CBD depends on your preference. Lots of individuals use CBD in the morning to reap the benefits during the day. However, others use it at night before going to bed as they are looking to positively impact their sleep.

Some people do both!

If you’re taking CBD with the intention of aiding your quality of sleep, then feel free to take it before bed.

If you’re taking CBD with the intention of reducing pain, the morning may be the best time.

There is currently no “best time” to take CBD oil. Like everything else when it comes to CBD, it all comes down to your specific needs.


Where Can I Buy CBD Oil for My Needs?

With CBD oil becoming a high-demand product for stress, anxiety, pain, and other uses, many retailers have opened up shop. What you need to be aware of when purchasing CBD is the price per milligram.

Many companies sell CBD products with low milligram content for high prices. Don’t be swayed by their marketing tactics as they’re just trying to make money off of you. Some retailers like Amazon don’t even sell real CBD.

Instead, choose a company that sells products for an affordable price with higher milligram content so you can find your dosage without consuming the entire bottle in a week.
